Hotel planning & design is very interesting yet challenging subject for me. We got the opportunity to learn something which I never expected before. We are required to do a group project by using AutoCAD to draw a restaurant dining area and kitchen layout. It is very difficult for me as I am totally not familiar with this system before I started the group assignment. The skills that are required to complete this group assignment is discipline specific knowledge and digital literacy. We have to know the method of using AutoCAD clearly and also the basic rules in planning and design a dining area and kitchen. Lots of brainstorming and planning were done before we started to draw the dining area and kitchen layout.
The most challenging part of working in group is the communication. Every people have different thinking. We cannot suppose other people to agree with you all the time. We must respect other people when they are talking or giving opinions. We do not have the right to say someone is wrong as we are just having the different opinions on that certain issue. So, we have to learn to persuade and to listen to ensure the smooth running of the assignment. The best part of working in group is that we will able to get more ideas in designing the restaurant. We might not be able to identify some minor mistakes ourselves but our group member might be able to point it out. Working in group reduces the errors in the assignment and make it more perfect. The assignment could also be done faster in group compare to individual as the task was divided. Each of us was assigned to the task that we are good in.
There is no group leader in our group since we had been doing many assignments together. The way of communicating in our group is simple. Usually, we will find a time that is suitable for everyone and discuss the assignment and work on it together. So, we are able to know the opinions of other group members and find out the mistakes on the spot. It makes thing easier. All of my group members are comes from Malaysia. They way we do things is similar. However, some of us are really good in drawing the layout while some are good in explaining the design and there are some who has a better understanding of the execution of a layout design. As such, we organize ourselves based on our capabilities in different areas of the project.
I think that I understand the kitchen equipments and it's proper placing in a kitchen because I have previously trained in a hotel kitchen and have first-hand knowledge about it. During our discussions, I have shared my knowledge on this particular part as to shed some light for my group mates who may not be so well-versed in the proper placement of kitchen equipments. However, I do not have much understanding about bar layout and a restaurants dining area layout. This, I feel, is the part which I did not do well in the assignment. This is because the restaurant type for this assignment is suited for fine-dining purposes whereas I've only worked in casual dining restaurants. Also, I think I did not gain a much better understanding about the workings of the AutoCAD program because during the course of the assignment, that particular task was handled by my other two group mates. Why this was so is because we felt that if everyone had a share in drawing the layout, there might be confusions on the scales used for the drawing.
I feel that I need to improve my Digital Literacy skills, which in this case, is the AutoCAD program. I feel that I did do enough practice on designing a drawing by using the AutoCAD software. I think I should rectify this mistake as I do believe that gaining an upper hand in the usage of the software will give me an advantage for my future career. Also, I would gain extra knowledge which may benefit my life.
